When Going Backward is a Good Thing

By Micky Wolf
A tiny glimmer of light. Oh, so small. Too small as far as I was concerned.

I needed clarity and understanding in order to resolve an issue.

Muddle muddle.

Ever been there? Patience, the spiritual guides will say. Trust in the One who knows. If you’re like me, some days are much better than others when it comes to living the truth of those pearls of wisdom.

And then, the heart nudge. “Take one step back,” the Spirit said. “One.”
In an instant, things changed. Me. Not the circumstances. Not the other stuff. Me.

What seemed limiting and confining before now revealed itself as a detail in the bigger picture. With the broader horizon came new awareness and insight regarding a variety of options that would provide a way to move forward.

Our tendency can be to see backward movement as a sign of failure at best, retreating or giving up at worst. Not necessarily so.

Sometimes all we really need is to allow ourselves the freedom to take a deep breath, relax, and step back far enough from our problem or concern to see it in the broader context of daily life.

Sometimes, what appears to be a dark tunnel really is a glimpse of the promise that awaits when we step into the light that is the shining presence of our good and great Creator God.

Do I tend to have tunnel vision at times?

How do I feel when it seems there is no clear direction for the next step?

Am I open to seeing an issue or concern in a new way, even if that means stepping back in order to take in the details of the bigger picture?
